COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT:
Transition Towns
"A transition town is a grassroot community project that seeks to build resilience in response to peak oil, climate destruction, and economic instability.
The transition model can be applied to different types of places where people live, such as villages and towns. The generic term is "transition initiative", which includes transition neighborhoods, communities, and cities, even though "transition town" is in common usage. Influences include permaculture concepts as described in Bill Mollison’s Permaculture, a Designers Manual (1988) and David Holmgren’s Permaculture: Principles and Pathways Beyond Sustainability (2003),[7] as well as David Fleming's work on community, culture and resilience. In 2008 the number of communities involved in the project had increased with many localities in the process of becoming "official" transition towns.[14] The initiative spread and by May 2010 there were over 400 community initiatives recognized as official Transition Towns in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Italy and Chile. The term transition initiatives become common to reflect the range and type of communities involved - e.g. villages (Kinsale), neighbourhoods of cities (Portobello, Edinburgh), through council districts (Penwith) to cities and city boroughs (Brixton).[15][16] By September 2013, there were 1130 initiatives registered (462 Official, 654 Muller) in 43 countries.[17] The main aim of the international project, echoed by local initiatives, is to raise awareness of sustainable living and build local ecological resilience in the near future." Excerpt from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transition_Towns_(network) There does not seem to be any official Transition Initiative in the Kingston Area. This makes Heatherton Christian College in an excellent position introduce this concept to our local area and get the community involved.

TED TALK:
"Rob Hopkins reminds us that the oil our world depends on is steadily running out. He proposes a unique solution to this problem — the Transition response, where we prepare ourselves for life without oil and sacrifice our luxuries to build systems and communities that are completely independent of fossil fuels." http://video.ted.com/talk/podcast/2009G/None/RobHopkins_2009G-480p.mp4

What's LETS?
"LETS (Local Energy Trading System) is a community based non-profit trading system that enables its members to exchange a wide variety of goods and services using little or no cash. It is a method of trading which depends on energy, skills and time instead of money, exchanging a unit of local currency, not as an alternative to conventional money but to complement the current system of trade." http://www.lets.org.au
Many LET Systems now use http://community-exchange.org/ or http://communityexchange.net.au/ to enter their transactions. Feel free to visit these websites and discover the rich features offered by this tool (it can be used to enter the transactions, add offers and wants and InterTrade).
Currently there are three CES servers hosting the different communities. There is also a Global server hosting trading communities from around the world, and Timebanking Australia.

There does not appear to be any LET's initiatives in the Kingston Area. The closest registred initiative is in Mornington Peninsula. I am currently (1/8/2014) seeing what interest there is in the school community to start a dialogue regarding the possibility of registering a LET group in the Kingston Council, administrated by HCC's Permaculture Community.
